Closet Makeover...It's time!

My Spring break is approaching it's last couple of days. All week I have devoted time to bonding with my dad while working on re-doing the disaster that was my closet. I moved into my home 2 years ago, the master bedroom had this gigantic closet with 4 even more gigantic sliding doors. It was totally impractical and overly annoying to use. Almost immediately after settling in I had those stupid doors removed thus leaving me  with an open faced closet with no doors. All you ever saw was a over packed mess of clothing and shoes.  Finally after almost 2.5 years it's changing.

My dad agreed to help me as long as I agreed to assist- with that as my only stipulation I said "heck yea- I'm done". He's eager to assist me in preparing my home for the arrival of my second child. He wants me to maximize space as he puts it "having 2 kids will leave you with less time to clean and organize. Lets get it over with now!" Gotta love him for that. #suchadaddysgirl

Anyway, we decided to take the open format of the existing closet and section it off into 3 separate sections, 2 for clothing and the middle section for shoes. The reason for this blog is to give you the motivation to clean and reorganize your closets. If you are like me, after having my daughter I out grew many pieces and simply stop wearing others because my style changed.  I was in denial and insisted that I was going to loose weight... ha never happened. So after completing the closet makeover with my dad I came up with a few tips for decluttering and reorganizing your closet!

Tips for Creating a Clean Functional Closet!

1. Clean EVERYTHING ( I MEAN EVERYTHING) from your closet. It should look as bare as it did when you moved in!

2. Begin to separate clothing that you actually wear from the clothing that you don't.  Some questions to ask include:
 - Does it still FIT?
- Have I worn it in the last 12 months?
-If I saw it in the store TODAY would I buy it?
- Do I LOVE the way it looks on me?

If  you answered yes to ALL of those then keep the garment. If you answered NO to one or more Toss it and never look back.

This check list can apply to shoes as well, cause I surly have well over 100 pairs of shoes.

Donate clothing VS. Throwing Away
Once you have rehung the newly appointed garments you will surely have several bags of discarded clothing .Deciding what to do with those is easy, give it away or donate. I have a check list of that too,

1. Donate if the clothing is free from stains, rips and is otherwise mint condition
2. Toss out if if has rips, stains and is not in wearable condition

Before making that trip to nearest Goodwill or thrift shop, do a quick google search for the nears shelter. They often need donations of clothing for residents who are in transition. Your trash just may becomes someone's blessing!
